My Thanksgiving Firestorm

Post by document »

I ended up spending an unusual amount of time with my ex-wife's family this weekend. It wasn't planned, it just sort of happened.

I found this image, it made me laugh my HEAD off. I shared it with my family (believers), who thought it was HILARIOUS.

I shared it with those around me, and "leave the church alone" statements came out of it.

There's your problem, Document. You could "leave the church" but you couldn't "leave the church alone". Faithful Mormons use this glib description as a crass condemnation for apostasy. But the faithful also implicitly demand that apostates definitely leave the church alone after you are degenerate enough to leave the church. Your experience with Mormonism leaves you distinctly qualified to produce hilarious satire and Mormons have very thin skins when it comes to apostates.

It must have been the source being me.

I'm pretty sure I would have found this hilarious as a believer (as my favorite joke when I was a believer was, "I had this joke I wasn't sure was appropriate for sacrament meeting, so I decided to ask my parents. So I went home and said, 'Hey dad and mom and mom and mom and mom and mom....'".

I'm not sure if I would have found it funny if an ex-Mormon had told me the joke, though. As it came from a bishop, it was a safe source.

I might just use the "amateur" image above as my facebook wallpaper.

Document,

My DW, a girl with a degree in Victorian lit, was absolutely amazed by that!

"Sooo F***ing funny!"
