Trying to find a Dallin Oaks quote

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

Trying to find a Dallin Oaks quote

Post by deacon blues »

My memory, which is sometimes reliable tells me that Dallin Oaks once spoke about the Middle Ages as a time when men relied on faith and that since the Renaissance and the Enlightenment society has been going downhill. Does anyone else recall this, and know where it might be found?
God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.

Maybe this:

The denial of God or the downplaying of His role in human affairs, which began in the Renaissance, has become pervasive today.
We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.

Thanks so much for showing me this, nibbler. The one I recall was more explicit, but this one shares the same theme.

I would like to take this chain of though back even further. There was once a time when people were connected with the earth and the sky as their deities. Then priests came along and started making a living by inventing gods, bossing people around, and tricking them out of their wealth and possessions. It has all been downhill since then.
